New Orleans Saints Going National with Reggie Bush

It´s good for America awards goes to the Saints this week. How could it not? They´re 5-1, atop the NFC South and inspiring a nation. Yea. they´re America´s team now--displacing the Cowboys...Drew Brees give the Saints what they haven´t had a quarterback: A guy who´s going to make good decisions on a weekly basis. Brees has the ability to pull out close games. We saw evidence of that when he took his team to those two fourth-quarter scoring drives...Drees has put up 1,509 yards passing for 8 TDs for a 66.7 percentage and an impressive 92.8 quarterback rating in six games...

Reggie Bush is putting up big numbers, but he used as a decoy to allow players like Mauques Colston  and Deuce McAllister have big games. Colston will be a candidate for rookie of the year honors at his current pace. "Reggie´s presence all over the field spreads out defenses and allows Deuce and the receivers room to get open," said Hokey Gajan, former Saints fullback and Saints radio analyst...One of the team´s most successful acquisitions was linebacker Scott Fujita, who is called the "Asian Assassin" by his teammates. He is leading the team in tackles, interceptions and is second in sacks...All the moves which were criticized before the season are now being praised....

Guard Jermane Mayberry has retired. Injuries and age finally caught up with him...When Saints coach Sean Payton took over, he walked in the locker room and spotted a reclining chair near a locker. The coach wanted to know which player had a chair like that in the locker room. An equipment man informer him it belonged to tackle Wayne Gandy. The coach said he wanted the chair out of the locker before the next morning. Gandy was traded to the Falcons...Former LSU great Billy Cannon said McAllister reminds him of himself when he was a pro running back. "He glides and breaks tackles," said the former Heisman Trophy winner from LSU who played with the Oilers, Raiders and Chiefs. Cannon, today an orthodontist, said the game has changed since his day. "The linemen are bigger, stronger and faster," he said...Cannon lives in St. Francisville and has a state contract to perform dental work in the penal institutions...His son, Billy Jr., a former Cowboys linebacker, owns a construction company in St. Francisville. The elder Cannon has survived heart bypass and prostate surgeries...Former Saints defensive end Elois Grooms? Owner of a retail battery store in Shreveport...Gajan said the best football player he remembers is Tommy Casanova, a two-way player for the Tigers who is an ophthalmologist in Cowley...

Fresno State coach Pat Hill, who brings his Bulldogs into Tiger Stadium Saturday night, was a candidate for the Saints coaching job that Payton got. In two weeks, his team plays WAC buzz Boise State. He´s looking at a 1-7 record and 11 losses in his last 12 games...Is anyone sending Father´s Day cards to Matt Leinart, the former USC quarterback now playing very well for the Cardinals?...The national media is rating the Saints No. 4 and 5 after their win over the Eagles...Since 2002, only four teams with 5-1 records have failed to make it to the playoffs: the 2003 Vikings, and the Saints, Chargers and Dolphins in 2002...Saints tight end Ernie Conwell said this year’s team is confident that it can overcome adversity and come back and win games, unlike Saints teams in recent seasons. That comes from the coaching staff...What do the Talladega Superspeed Way, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Daytona International Raceway, Tigers Stadium, and the Auburn and Florida football stadiums have in common? Seating for 80,000+ NASCAR fans.

Libby Trial Dodges The Truth (The New York Sun) "This is supposed to be about finding the truth." That audacious declaration came from Judge Reggie Walton last week at the perjury and obstruction-of-justice trial of I. Lewis Libby Jr., who served as Vice President Cheney's top aide between 2001 and 2005. While mindful that it is unwise to cross a federal judge, especially one in whose courtroom I've been sitting on and off for the past month, ...

Prosecutor calls Libby claims 'ludicrous' (USA Today) Former vice presidential aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby concocted a "ludicrous" story to cover for lying to investigators about the leak of a CIA operative's name, a federal prosecutor said today during closing arguments in Libby's perjury and obstruction of justice trial.

Libby Case About 'Lying,' Prosecutors Say (Washington Post) I.
